Fabricating Personal Ornament

#Goals for me right now, is pushing myself to break out of my comfort zone. I've been creating with a plan and structure that I've become accustomed to. My goal is to break free from that and grow not only as a creative, but as a person.

When did you realize art was your passion?

Art became my passion when I was a senior in high school. I took Foundations to Art and loved it. I had the ability to do what I wanted for the first time. I didn't have to follow the strict guidelines of music or the mathematical rules of science. It was just me and a brush or pencil. I fell in love with the freedom of art. I truly realized I was good enough when I put myself out there and got recognition for my work. The validation of scholarship and acceptance into shows is what really set the groundwork for where I am today.

How would you describe your style aesthetic?

I would describe my aesthetic right now as "crisp complexity". By incorporating flat color with symbolic meanings alongside visually complex compositions, I provoke thoughts about relationshipssexuality and identity. The analogous forms provide mirrors and facets into our lives that we don't see normally.

What/Who has inspired you most?

The things that inspire me most are my friends and the relationships I have with them. I'm a sponge in social situations, taking in cues and synthesizing information to put on paper or canvas. I love talking to people about things they love, because that lets me see their true identity. These complex emotions inspire me immensely in my work. I'm also inspired by ornamentation and how we present ourselves to the world.

Any advice?

My advice for other young artists is to be yourself and don't be afraid to push boundaries. You are the only one who knows your vision, your dreams, you ambitions and your goals. You are the one who has to see them to fruition. People and mentors will be there to guide you, but ultimately, you are the one to make the move. Be ambitious, do things you never thought possible. Work Big! In school you have the space, so take advantage. Go to every art thing you can. Go abroad, the best experiences of my life have happened on foreign soil. Most of all be yourself, because thats the best you, you can be.
